Crimson Chronicle — detail

Crimson Chronicle

She is framed on both sides by gold columns of ancestral pictograms — little figures, spirals, zigzags, totems — an ongoing text that predates the alphabet and will outlast it. She does not need to read them. She is the text.

Her profile is held with the authority of a monument: dark upswept natural hair piled high, the jaw set, the eye half-lidded and serene. The white markings on her face sweep from brow to chin — not cosmetic, ceremonial. An earring coils at her lobe in red and gold dots. A gold ring glints at her nose. At her throat, a teal collar-plate spotted like a serpent's back.

The deep crimson field is the same one that appears in battle standards, in kente cloth, in the lining of the garments worn to mark the most important moments of a life. She stands in it naturally. It is not a dramatic backdrop. It is simply where she lives.
