The Living Statue

She has been carved into permanence — and yet she breathes. Rendered as a bust on a pedestal of leaves and roses, her body wrapped in linen the colour of old ivory, she wears a headwrap so elaborate it has become its own architecture: brown locs, teal spirals, red zigzags, dotted amber, green stripe. A layered headpiece that holds an entire cultural vocabulary.

At her throat, a gold Adinkra pendant — a Sankofa bird facing backward and forward at once. Her gold earrings are heavy with intention. Her eyes are closed or nearly so, cast upward, the expression of someone receiving rather than seeking.

The pedestal is carved with golden leaves, the roses at its base still alive despite the stone. This is the contradiction at the heart of the work: she is monument and woman, permanent and present. The orange field behind her is the colour of harvest — everything that grew and was gathered and will be given. She is both the statue and the sculptor. She made herself.
